Do EMS volunteers even exist in Canada?

Most Canadians are unaware that a significant number of communities rely on volunteers to render care and transport. In fact, every province and territory has some volunteers that are able to respond in rural or more remote areas. This is a vital service where more advanced care may be at quite a distance. 

According to the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, “Seventy percent of trauma deaths in Canada occur in rural areas, even though only 30% of Canadians live there.”

Beyond ambulances, you might have seen us providing aid at larger events, on a ski hill, at a hockey game or a Remembrance Day ceremony. Often times we are confused with paid professionals.

We like to think of ourselves as the unpaid professionals association. We do our best to help in times of need. If you're a volunteer Certified First Responder or higher, this association wants to help you network with others that share your commitment and passion; to provide opportunities for continuing education and to help you always stay current in this highly specialized field; to ensure you have the resources and support to stay motivated and dedicated; to celebrate volunteerism and to promote ourselves  to the general population, too often unaware of the vital role we play in our communities.
